The humble Fiat 500 has been named the top wedding car choice on social media as loved-up couples seek to save money on their big day while still having many cute photos.

The Italian-made supermini is famous worldwide with couples planning an affordable but memorable wedding day, researchers for car rental experts StressFreeCarRental.com have discovered.

Traditional limousines and vintage cars now account for only a minority of Instagram posts, with more affordable, less ostentatious vehicles becoming increasingly popular.

For loved-up couples arriving at their marriage venue in style no longer means hiring a limousine as couples increasingly opt for compact and quirky wedding cars.

Rising wedding costs, the global pandemic and increased cost of living have all been factors in a trend away from expensive wedding cars towards more affordable and distinctly quirky vehicle choices.

The researchers found that small compact cars and quirky retro camper vans now make up most of Instagram’s top posts with the #WeddingCars hashtag.

Compact cars such as The Fiat 500, Mini, Citroen 2CV and even the tiny Smart Car all feature on social media posts highlighting wedding vehicles.

Here are the top quirky wedding cars on Instagram, as identified by car rental experts from StressfreeCarRental.com.

2. VW Beetle

5. Citroen 2CV
6. Renault 4
7. Smart Car

Traditional choices, such as a Rolls Royce, a Mercedes luxury saloon or a supercar, account for only a minority of posts.

Researchers from StressFreeCarRental.com trawled through Instagram to name the compact cars on the network’s top 1000 posts with the hashtag #WeddingCars.

Many couples save money by opting for a small wedding car and create cute and lasting memories of their big day.

A spokesman for StressFreeCarRental.com, who carried out the research, said: “When it comes to choosing a wedding car, it has always been traditional for couples to hire large impressive vehicles to turn up at the venue in style and wow their guests.

“Social media used to be full of images of stretch limos and top marque vehicles transporting brides and grooms to and from their dream weddings.

“But there’s now a growing trend for couples to choose less flashy cars, and instead, they’re opting for cute and quirky vehicles as well as things like camper vans that can add a unique touch to a wedding and make it memorable for all the guests.

“The Fiat 500 is top of the pack for an affordable choice that also makes an adorable prop for wedding photos.”
