This is the redesigned Audi A8, although the Ingolstadt folks would rather call this midlife update a “product improvement.”
Either way, with the facelift, the fourth-generation A8 has been on sale for four years. Sales figures are also outstanding – Audi says it has sold 86,000 units worldwide despite the launch of the Q8 in 2018 and buyers’ obsession with SUVs. If you were wondering – China is currently the most important market for the A8, which is why it just got its own Maybach special edition.
The standard A8 (and its long-wheelbase twin) gets the usual facelift with new front and rear bumpers and a larger grille. Although you can now get it in S-Line trim, the new mouth is exceptionally chrome, where black plastic replaces the shiny metal. Tick that off, and you’ll also get sportier seats and bigger wheels.
The rest of the A8’s modest exterior has been left essentially unchanged, although new digital headlights and signature taillights match the rest of the Audi range. The interior is also remarkably similar to before, although you have the option of upholstering the door panels, pillars and headlining in the eco-friendly Dinamica fabric. The perfect complement to the standard Valetta or optional Valcona leather seats…
The powertrains remain very similar, too – does anyone else spot a theme here? You have a choice of a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, 3.0-litre V6 petrol, 4.0-litre V8 petrol and a plug-in hybrid that combines the six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 14.4 kWh battery to deliver 456bhp of power and an electric range of around 30 miles.
Audi’s predictive active suspension remains, and all-wheel steering is available as an option, although it is standard on the V8-powered S8. The S8 also gets updated with new S-Line bumpers, though, as you can see above, it retains its quad exhaust system.
