This is what the new Lexus RZ electric SUV will look like when it is unveiled in its entirety in the coming months. It’s… not bad, is it?
At least not by SUV standards. The indentations on the side of the defunct grille give it it a bit of edge, and there are plenty of exciting creases throughout the design that helps it stand out from the crowd. Let us hope it does not get too boring before it goes on sale.
When it does go on sale, the RZ will be the first Lexus-branded electric car designed specifically for electric propulsion. You will recall that the UX300e is based on an architecture developed initially for internal combustion engines.
This time, the RX will be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, which means it is a sibling of the upcoming bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.
Toyota’s attempt gets a 71-kWh battery and a range of 280 miles. Front-wheel-drive models produce 201 hp and make it from 0 to 62 mph in 8.4 seconds, while all-wheel-drive variants with two engines produce 214 hp and shave 0.7 seconds off the sprint.
Meanwhile, a 150 kW charging station is in the pipeline, allowing an 80 per cent charge in just 30 minutes.
Lexus’ numbers will likely be almost identical in every way, as they are in the modern world of shared underpinnings.
