Unexpected Things That Every Auto Mechanic Should Have

It’s not the basics that every auto mechanic should have on hand. These are some unexpected tools that could save you a lot of time and hassle.

Tools are a mechanic’s lifeblood. Over the years, they’ve amassed quite a collection, and some of them might surprise you.

You never know what you’re going to need when you’re an auto mechanic, but there are a few things that you should always have on hand. From strange tools to unusual parts, these are a few unexpected things that every auto mechanic should have in their shop.

An Automotive Stethoscope

This tool is essential for diagnosing engine problems. By placing the stethoscope on different engine parts, you can pinpoint where the problem is. Some stethoscope kits even come with an extension that allows you to hear into hard-to-reach places.

A Vacuum Pump

A vacuum pump is a handy tool that you can use for various tasks, from bleeding brakes to testing for leaks in the engine. Use it by attaching the fluid reservoir to the vacuum pump, and you’re good to go. Plus, it can inflate tires if you don’t have an air compressor.

Automotive Sandpaper

You might not use this one every day, but it’s always good to have a few automotive sandpaper sheets on hand. These sheets will come in handy more often than you’d think, whether you’re smoothing out a rough edge or sanding down a paint job.

If you have a client who needs their car painted, you can use your sandpaper selection and grit to prep the surface for painting and produce a professional-looking finish.

A Light Hood

It can be difficult to see into an engine bay, especially when diagnosing a problem. A light hood is a must-have for any mechanic. It attaches to the car’s hood and has a light that shines down, making it much easier to see what you’re doing.

A Dent Puller

Dents happen, and sometimes, they’re in hard-to-reach places. A dent puller is a handy tool to remove those dents without damaging the paint. You can find relatively inexpensive dent pullers at most auto parts stores.

Mechanics can never have too many tools, and these are a few of the unexpected things that every auto mechanic should have in their shop. Think about what you use most often, and be prepared for anything that comes your way.
