A recall filed last week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the driver’s airbag could rupture if deployed in as many as 7,600 vehicles. So far in 2021, Tesla has produced a total of 11,281 of these two EVs.
NHTSA estimates that only 1 per cent of the 7,600 vehicles are affected by the problem, which is due to a new production method at one of Tesla’s suppliers in Mexico.
The flaw was discovered earlier this year during quality testing. There have been no real incidents and no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Tesla is replacing the airbags on all potentially affected vehicles free of charge. Owners of Model X vehicles produced between 3 and 23 September and Model S vehicles produced between 21 and 29 September will be notified of the recall and the free repair.
