This is not the first Lancia Aurelia Outlaw conversion we have seen. But it is the most alluring. Like the others, it is the work of Thornley Kelham, a company in the Cotswolds that started as a classic car paint shop in 2009 before evolving into a restoration business.
[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”2″ display=”basic_slideshow”]The company builds nine Outlaws in total, but the stakes have become higher with just three left. The Lancia Aurelia has 100 more horsepower and weighs 75 kilos less. So has the performance.
Three letters were synonymous with less mass, so the Aurelia was fitted with lightweight aluminium panels instead of handmade steel. It takes 5,000 hours to build such a model. Regardless of the material used, 800 hours are spent on painting—a clear allusion to the company’s previous work.
The CSL is powered by one of the big engines, a 3.2-litre V6 engine that you already know from some famous Alfa Romeos. It displaces the 2.8-litre V6 that Thornley Kelham typically installs in the Outlaw.
“The new engine will produce more than 300bhp,” they say, “a significant upgrade on the earlier versions of the ‘Outlaw’ which produced around 220bhp and the original Aurelia itself, which produced around 118bhp.”
It transmits power to the rear wheels via a five-speed transaxle gearbox and a limited-slip differential. Power steering is optional, modern brakes are standard, and the suspension has been tweaked compared to the company’s other Aurelias. In other words, it should feel neat.
“Weighing just over 1,100kg, the European CSL is incomparably light by modern standards and offers a very different thrill to heavy modern road cars with turbo engines and wide tyres,” we are promised. “It offers a razor-sharp purity that simply cannot be matched even in today’s most driver-oriented road cars.”
The interior features a fully integrated roll cage, air conditioning as standard, and Alcantara’s whole roll. As you would expect, the final equipment and appearance are tailored to the tastes of the (undoubtedly wealthy) buyer.
