What Vehicle Repairs Can You Make Yourself?

Sometimes, your vehicle requires maintenance, and you must take matters into your own hands. Luckily, you can do certain repairs on your own.

Many of us understand that vehicles will eventually need repairs. However, it’s not always possible to reach a repair shop or mechanic to fix the problem, and we want to fix some problems ourselves. Fortunately, we may perform certain repairs at our leisure and fix the vehicle promptly without needing a mechanic.

Changing the Oil

When you take your car in for an inspection or tune-up, the mechanic will change your oil for a small fee. However, if you don’t want to spend money on this simple service, you can change the oil yourself. Changing the oil in a car is simple, but it will require a car jack to lift the vehicle and a bucket or large tray to catch the oil that comes out.

Remove the plastic tray, oil cap, and oil filter in that order, and let the oil leak out. Once the oil stops leaking, replace the cap and install a new oil filter. Replace the plastic tray and lower the vehicle before pouring the oil into the engine.

Once you are finished, locate the dipstick—which has a plastic ring handle—and unscrew it. Wipe off the flat metal rod and replace it into its opening. Take it out once more to inspect the engraved marks that the oil reaches. If the oil marking falls below the “ADD” indication line, you must add more oil before screwing in the dipstick and closing the hood.

Removing Scratches

It’s normal for people to go to a repair shop to buff out scratches, but you can make these repairs yourself with a liquid scratch remover. Your car’s paint is thick, so the scratch may not have gone through all the layers. If you want to repair a light scratch, you can use a compound that will rub off the scratched layer and leave a clear polish that makes the surface look clean.

Deeper scratches may require an eraser kit that will make the area look even and “hide” the scratch, but you’ll need to be mindful not to scrape the metal underneath the paint. Ensuring the vehicle’s damage doesn’t worsen is one of the benefits of having a professional repair your car, but in most cases, you can do it yourself.

Replacing Air Filters

The engine’s air filters are important for keeping particles, such as dirt and dust, out of the engine. Having a mechanic replace them is simple, but making this vehicle repair yourself requires less work. You’ll need to locate the air filter under the hood before you start, which may require you to look into the owner’s manual for easier searching.

Once located, remove the top, which may have screws or snaps depending on the vehicle. Next, replace the current air filter with the new one and replace the top. You’ll need to use a rag once you’re finished, as the dirty filter will most likely leave dirt on your hands.
