KW Automotive Develops Adaptive Coilover Suspension Kit for BMW i4 eDrive40 Gran Coupe

The electronically adjustable KW DDC Plug & Play Coilover kit is now available for the electric BMW i4 eDrive40 (G26) Gran Coupe with optional adaptive M suspension. After the stainless-steel KW and DDC, Coilovers are installed and the plugs are connected, adjustments to the headlight range and rear axle heights need to be made.

The electronic BMW system recognizes the DDC dampers immediately and adjusts the setup to the respective driving situation. The KW DDC Plug & Play Coilovers for the BMW i4 eDrive40 (G26) are based on the same technology that KW uses in the original equipment for the Rimac Nevera electric hypercars. At the front axle, the continuous lowering can be adjusted between 20 – 40 millimetres and 15 – 35 millimetres at the rear axle.

KW Automotive has developed adaptive Coilover suspension kits for the aftermarket for over ten years. The semi-active KW DDC Plug & Play coilovers are already available for more than 150 vehicles. KW has also completed its DDC development for the all-electric BMW i4 eDrive40 (G26) Gran Coupe.

Plug and Play

Standard chassis control systems in the automotive industry recognize the KW DDC valves. The variety of driving modes of the respective car manufacturer are retained and compatible with the KW DDC Plug & Play Coilover kit.

In the BMW i4 eDrive40 Gran Coupe, the stainless-steel Coilover suspension kit replaces the optional adaptive M shocks. Controlling and adjusting the KW DDC dampers are handled entirely by BMW’s standard electronics.

Within milliseconds the electromagnetic valves react to the respective control inputs from the standard sensor system. Installing the KW DDC Plug & Play Coilover suspension is like retrofitting the OEM shocks.

“The BMW damper control system does not have to be deactivated, as it is when installing conventional sports suspension kits”, explains Florian Johann of the KW Brand Management team. “The various KW DDC Plug & Play coilovers always feature plugs compatible with the OEM system. Tweaking or modifying the BMW suspension control software is unnecessary because the DDC valves are tailor-made for the BMW system.”

The various driving modes of the electric-powered BMW are still selected from the cockpit. In Comfort Mode, the adaptive KW DDC suspension absorbs road irregularities without the BMW i4 eDrive40 (G26) Gran Coupe losing any cornering stability.

Thanks to the KW DDC struts on the front axle, the handling of the 340 hp electric car is improved – even for a heavy car with more than 2,2 tons of weight. Roll comfort is also maintained in the other modes of the semi-active suspension.

“It is more comfortable on undulating roads than the conventional i4 standard suspension without adaptive dampers,” Florian Johann continues, “In Sport Mode, the electric car characterizes itself with its typical BMW sports car feature and is still comfortable on long rides.”

The only thing that needs to be adjusted manually in the KW DDC Plug & Play Coilover suspension is the ride height during suspension installation. When retrofitting the DDC Coilover suspension, the lowering is adjustable between 20 to 40 millimetres on the front axle and on the rear from 15 to 35 millimetres via a KW link rod. The adaptive optional M air suspension system on the drive-axle remains on board when converting to the KW DDC Plug & Play Coilover suspension in the BMW i4 eDrive40 (G26) Gran Coupe.
