Best Ways To Increase the Range of Your EV

If you’re new to EVs, you might not know all the best ways to increase its overall range. In this guide, we’ve put together some of the best ways to do so.

Generally, people who own gas cars don’t put much thought into how much gas they waste while driving. The reason for this is due to the fact that gas cars take mere minutes to get back on the road once they’re out of fuel. On the other hand, once an EV runs out of power, it can sometimes take as long as an hour to have a full battery again.

This is why EV owners care so much more about the range their vehicles can get. If you’d like to be able to get the most out of your car’s battery, these tips on how to increase your EV’s range will be quite helpful for you.

Control Your Speed

One thing that’s fun about EVs is many of them can speed up very quickly. However, even though you don’t burn gas when you slam on the accelerator, quickly fluctuating your speed will take a lot of juice out of your battery. That means you’ll need to take it easy when accelerating and braking.

This also applies to driving at higher speeds. Even if you keep your speed consistent, moving quickly will use much more electricity. Driving at a maximum of around 60 miles per hour can help you get the most range out of your vehicle.

Travel Light

One thing that most gas car owners never consider when trying to increase their mileage is the vehicle’s weight. This is something that many EV drivers do their best to reduce where possible. Whether you have a trailer, roof rack, or stuff inside the vehicle, the additional weight it adds will reduce your potential range.

If you do need to pack the car for a long trip or potential move, it’s best to keep as much of your stuff inside the vehicle as possible, though. This is because trailers and roof racks will increase wind resistance, further reducing your EV’s range.

Upgrade Your Vehicle

One downside to EVs is they’re not as easy to modify as a standard car. However, if you have the know-how or extra cash, you can upgrade your vehicle in ways that’ll help increase its range. One of the best upgrades you can install to boost range is an engine control module. This chip can help distribute power, manage the battery, and charge the car more efficiently.

If you want to make a change that isn’t as tech based, look into upgrading your wheels. There are quite a few ways that your wheel and tire choice can affect your EV. If you find a set of wheels lighter than your current one, though, you’ll be sure to get quite a few more miles out of each full charge.

Limit Your Electronics Usage

This last way to increase the range of your EV might seem obvious, but it’s still worth pointing out. You should always try to limit your electronic usage in the car. This means refraining from charging your phones, blasting music, or turning on unnecessary lights when trying to make your battery last a little bit longer. Some less obvious inclusions to this list are heating and air conditioning. If you turn these all the way up, it’ll drain your battery much faster than normal.
