How To Maximize the Lifespan of Your Tires

Whether you’re enthusiastic about cars or simply want to protect your investment, let’s talk about how you can maximize the lifespan of your tires.

Cars are expensive enough as is without having to spring for new tires every few months. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or simply trying to get the most out of your investment, there are methods to monitor the condition of your tires and methods of preventing them from becoming damaged. Here’s how to maximize the lifespan of your tires.

Check Your Tire Pressure Monthly

The air pressure in your tires can change over time, whether that be from the air escaping or because of shifting temperatures. For that reason, you should make an effort to check your tire pressure at least once a month and adjust it accordingly. Doing this is a safety matter and ensures your car is using fuel as efficiently as possible. Deflated tires make it harder for your car to move, forcing the engine to work hard, while over-inflated tires are at greater risk of popping.

Keep in mind that cold weather will cause the air in your tires to contract, lowering your air pressure, while hot weather causes the air to expand, increasing your air pressure.

Get Your Tires Rotated

Another way to maximize the lifespan of your tires is to have your wheels rotated every 5000 miles. “Front-wheel drive” and “back-wheel drive” refers to which two wheels are propelling the car forward, which can lead to uneven tire wear. To prevent certain tires from becoming more worn out than others, mechanics will move your wheels to a different position so that they all receive the same amount of wear and don’t need to be replaced as quickly.

Check Tire Alignment

Alignment issues are when the wheels are not facing straight and either lean inward (pigeon-toed) or outward (duck-footed) and may cause your car to pull to a certain side or cause your steering wheel to vibrate. This vastly reduces fuel efficiency and puts extra stress on your tires, quickly wearing them out.

Consider Your Habits

Lastly, consider the way you drive and what you put your car through. For example, if you have a tendency to slam on the brakes, you’re wearing down your tires faster with all that friction. On the other hand, the type of roads you travel on can have different effects on your tires. Highways are often the best for preserving tires while city streets can be rough and stressful. By altering your driving habits and decisions, you can reduce how much wear your tires endure.
