Brits are being urged to familiarise themselves with parking before heading off on summer road trips to avoid facing fines. Some leading car experts are advising motorists to park responsibly to help avoid causing disruption in rural areas and seaside towns.
This comes after the Peak District introduced red line restrictions in certain areas to prevent vehicles from damaging the landscape and to encourage visitors to use designated car parking spaces.
Parking on red lines will result in a £70 penalty charge, which may be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
While finding a parking space in busy tourist spots can be challenging, drivers should avoid parking simply because a space appears available.
Irresponsible parking can create significant problems for local communities, particularly during peak holiday periods when roads and public spaces are already under pressure.
Even where there is no obvious signage prohibiting parking, motorists should consider whether their vehicle could obstruct access, restrict visibility or inconvenience others.
As seen in parts of the Peak District, inappropriate parking can cause damage to verges and spoil natural landscapes whilst creating hazards for other road users.
Hazards from poorly parked vehicles may include traffic jams on narrow roads and restricted access for emergency services, agricultural machinery, and other large vehicles.
Those looking to stop overnight should also use official overnight parking facilities to avoid obstructing roads, which could lead to accidents or cause environmental damage.
Before setting off on road trips, drivers should check local parking regulations and use official parking spaces where available.
