How Improper L Plates Can Cost New Drivers Penalty Points

Leaner drivers are being warned they could end up with penalty points for driving with improper L plates. Motoring experts worldwide are urging learner drivers to familiarise themselves with the rules surrounding L plates to avoid incurring points on their provisional licenses.

Failing to display L plates correctly can result in six penalty points, which will be transferred to their full licence once they pass.

Receiving any more points within the first two years of passing will result in them having to reapply for a provisional and retake their test.

Driving with L plates is a legal requirement for those with a provisional license, and by law, they must be a red letter on a white background and the correct size of 178mm by 178mm.

The L plate must also be clearly visible to others both in front of and behind the vehicle, and be positioned so as not to obstruct the learner driver’s view.

John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco, said: “If you hold a provisional licence and you’re looking to get some extra practice on the road, it’s crucial that you make sure you’re meeting the correct requirements when it comes to your L plate.

“Some people might not be aware that by law, these plates have to be a certain size. Whether you’re buying them from a store or printing them at home yourself, always double-check the dimensions, which you can find on the government website.

“You also need to make sure you have one on both the front and back of your car so all drivers are aware you’re a learner. The signs need to be clearly visible, too, so if you find yours have become scuffed or faded over time or from harsh weather, it’s important to replace them.

“This will allow other road users to leave you more space and anticipate that you may be less experienced, therefore helping to avoid any accidents

“Sticking to these rules helps keep everyone safe on the road, and failure to comply could mean you’re hit with six penalty points before you’ve even passed your test.

“These will stay on your license as you transition over to a full one, and if you get any more points within the first two years of passing, your license will be cancelled, and you’ll have to apply and pay for a new provisional and retake your theory and practical test.”
