Many navigation systems display local speed limits to help drivers avoid fines, but experts warn that their data could be incorrect, causing motorists to break limits unknowingly.
The experts say devices may not be updating at the same time as new speed limits are being implemented, causing issues for drivers who aren’t paying attention to road signs.
The fines for speeding vary depending on the road, but they can be up to £2,500 on a motorway.
The experts are issuing an urgent warning to motorists and reminding them that over-reliance on navigation systems could cost them.
It comes as councils introduce new 20mph speed limits in Wales, Oxfordshire and Dorset.
Other councils are set to follow their example, hoping to emulate their success and reduce speeding in their local areas.
Observing road signs is the best way to stay safe and ensure that all laws and speed limits are being followed.
