How Your Sat Nav Could Land You With a £2,500 Fine

Motorists are warned that relying on their sat navs to inform them of correct speed limits could land them a hefty fine or penalty points. Experts urge motorists to stop blindly trusting their sat navs to correctly display each road’s speed limit.

Many navigation systems display local speed limits to help drivers avoid fines, but experts warn that their data could be incorrect, causing motorists to break limits unknowingly.

The experts say devices may not be updating at the same time as new speed limits are being implemented, causing issues for drivers who aren’t paying attention to road signs.

The fines for speeding vary depending on the road, but they can be up to £2,500 on a motorway.

The experts are issuing an urgent warning to motorists and reminding them that over-reliance on navigation systems could cost them.

It comes as councils introduce new 20mph speed limits in Wales, Oxfordshire and Dorset.

Other councils are set to follow their example, hoping to emulate their success and reduce speeding in their local areas.

Observing road signs is the best way to stay safe and ensure that all laws and speed limits are being followed.

Jake Smith, Director of Absolute Reg, said: “With so many local authorities looking to introduce new, lower speed limits in their local area to reduce accidents, it is more important than ever for motorists to be aware of road signs.

“Checking your sat nav for the speed limit can be helpful on unknown roads or when you can’t spot a road sign, but drivers must be aware of the risks.

“Over-reliance on navigation systems can lead to many issues for drivers. But, being caught out by not paying attention to updated speed limits could seriously cost you, with the risk of a £2,500 fine.

“It is essential for new drivers, who may not be used to looking out for new speed limit signs on the roads.

“Before starting your journey, ensure your navigation system has no outstanding updates. This can ensure the most up-to-date information. But, watch for speed limit signs on the roads to avoid driving dangerously.”
