Volvo Cars Appoints Helen Hu as General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer

Volvo Cars announces today that Helen Hu has been appointed General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer and Member of the Executive Management Team from February 1 2024.

Helen has succeeded Maria Hemberg, the company’s general counsel and chief legal officer, since joining Volvo Cars in 2012. Helen is currently the Managing Director for Volvo Cars Switzerland.

Helen has been with Volvo Cars since 2016 as part of the legal team under Maria Hemberg’s leadership. She has held senior roles in the APAC organisation, where she was a driving force in the business transformation.

Helen has a deep global experience; she has lived and worked in China and the US and has been a European resident since early 2023. Her background includes time as a lawyer and legal counsel within leading firms in the US and China and regional general counsel for European-based multinational corporations.

Volvo Cars’ CEO Jim Rowan said: “We welcome Helen Hu as our new General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer and to the Executive Management Team. Helen is a strong leader, bringing vast global experience and strong business acumen that spans the US, Europe and APAC. I look forward to working closely with her on our exciting journey.

“We also thank Maria for all her contributions during her almost 12-year tenure as General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer. Maria has played a crucial role at Volvo Cars during our company’s most pivotal years. Maria has successfully established Volvo Cars’ governance supporting our listing on the NASDAQ Stockholm and has developed high-performing teams in legal, compliance, intellectual property and corporate governance, which are all critical to our business today.”

Maria Hemberg will, from February 1, enable a smooth transition and operate in a senior advisory capacity, reporting to our CEO, Jim Rowan.
