Sony Has Confirmed a Gran Turismo TV Series Is in the Works
Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra confirmed in a recent conference call with Autos Community that the company plans to produce TV series of its major games, including its best-selling racing simulator.
We have a very robust lineup of PlayStation IP,” Vinciquerra said. “Uncharted did very well as our first project combined with PlayStation IP. We have about ten projects in development right now, including a series in production with HBO called The Last of Us, which we are very excited about. We have Horizon on Netflix, God of War on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and Twisted Metal on Peacock.
“And we are also working on a game called Gran Turismo. We have a lot of IP and a lot of other projects we want to put into production,” he added.
While there are no concrete details about the television series GT, one can only hope it’s not just the story of a gamer who curves around Trial Mountain 37 times in a Honda Civic for the credits. That may be satisfying, but only for gamers.
Sony, of course, is transferring a lot of its game content into other forms – as Vinciquerra mentioned, Uncharted was a huge success, grossing over $400 million at the box office. And The Last of Us – perhaps the best video game of all time – is likely to be one of the most extensive TV series. (In fact, an entire mission in TLOU revolves around finding a battery for a dead car. If you know, you know).
And you might be interested to know that Sony is buoyed by the success of the PlayStation 5, which would explain the expansion of its entertainment base. Sony was selling six PS4s a minute in the same period, whereas it is now shifting a thousand PS5s every minute.
What do you think the series GT TV should look like?
