Toyota has bowed to pressure from enthusiasts and announced that its GR Supra Coupé would be offered a six-speed manual gearbox.
The new gearbox will join the existing eight-speed torque converter automatic, the only transmission option since the car’s launch in 2019. Details are thin on the ground at the moment. Toyota tweeted six-gear emojis with a teaser image of the Supra’s rear end, showing a new red “Supra” badge.
An accompanying blog post on Toyota’s website features an image of a footwell with three pedals. It also confirms that the new red badge will be used on manual car versions.
The blog post says: “The Toyota GR Supra manual gearbox has been developed to offer enthusiasts something closer to the Gazoo Racing DNA and enhance the driving experience.”
We already know that the manual versions of the Toyota Supra have been developed in parallel with the automatic cars, so fans have been waiting a long time for them to hit the market. We do not yet know whether BMW’s four and six-cylinder engines offered in the Supra will get a manual option or whether it will be limited to just one machine.
It is also unclear whether Toyota and its Gazoo Racing Performance division plan to change the Supras’ manual-shift chassis further to enhance the intended engaging driving experience. The Supra’s sister model, the BMW Z4, is only available with an automatic.
There is still no word on the other big rumour surrounding the Toyota Supra, namely a possible Toyota Supra GRMN high-performance variant. Such a car could boost the power of the Supra’s 3.0-litre inline-six from 340bhp and feature more aggressive suspension and steering.
