The new Continental Supersports features unique exterior and interior styling cues which reflect the significant uplift in the performance capability of this pinnacle grand tourer. John Paul Gregory, Head of Exterior Design, demonstrates how he sketches one.
“I’ve been sketching cars ever since I was a little boy. There is no ‘correct’ way to sketch,” says Gregory, who is self-taught.
“I prefer to sketch with pen on paper. Firstly, it’s important to lay the foundations with the wheel position. It helps to get the proportions right for the rest of the car.
“There are just three lines which make any Bentley Continental instantly recognizable. The fast fly line – the silhouette of the car. Then the power line which is the sharp line which comes over the front wheel, and then the haunch over the rear wheel. These three lines define the core character of the Continental GT.
“The Bentley face is iconic; we have a large matrix grille and four round lights.
“The exterior styling changes for the Continental Supersports have been introduced to follow a function. To cool the immensely powerful engine we have introduced bonnet vents to enhance air flow. To improve aero dynamism we have introduced a rear spoiler.
“A designer’s job is many things; not just sketching. But it’s certainly the most enjoyable part. It’s straight from his heart onto the paper.
“For me, sketching is the perfect start point for great design.”
